What a wonderful event!
Books and Bites was hosted by my church home, Emory Fellowship in Washington, DC under the leadership of Joseph W. Daniels, Jr. He was so receptive and excited about the idea of having an event showcasing all the members of our church who are authors. Books and Bites featured authors Denyce Boone, Pastor Daniels, Robert Dantlzer, Dawn Robinson, Suzette Stona and myself. The event was highlighted in our "Real Talk" weekly newsletter and mentioned during service announcements leading up to the event.
I knew our Emory family was supportive but this was a different type of love! Our gymnasium was transformed into a true author book signing event! There was seating for the author panel up front with additional seating for 30 supporters and vendor tables for each author to display our published writings, engage with members and sign our books.
We planned to start the event by having an author panel where each author would speak briefly on the inspiration behind their writings. This idea was tossed out the window when I entered the gymnasium and there were already crowds of people at each of our display tables! I hurried up and got to my table, put my bags down and began engaging with my church family as did all of my fellow authors. Smiles and laugher filled the gymnasium.
I signed books and briefly shared my story behind my Children’s Book. There was even an unspoken assembly line created. While I was signing the books, my daughter, London, would accept the payment, then my mom would bring it home by putting the books in a nice thank you bag with some rainbow stickers for the kiddies. I barely had time to partake in the "Bites" part of the event!
As the crowd died down, I was able to visit the tables of my fellow authors and interact with a few folks that had purchased my Children’s Book. It was a great time had by all!
"Books and Bites" was such a huge success that we plan on hosting another event towards the end of this year and this time incorporate all Emory Business Owners!
